Ms. Marvel will get a live-action TV series on Disney Plus

Kamala Khan comes to the streaming screen

Susana Polo is an entertainment editor at Polygon, specializing in pop culture and genre fare, with a primary expertise in comic books. Previously, she founded The Mary Sue.

During the company’s Disney Plus Showcase panel at the D23 convention, Walt Disney studios confirmed that Kamala Khan will get her own live-action TV series on Disney Plus — and she’ll appear in a future, and unnamed, film. Yes, Ms. Marvel is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Ms. Marvel was the long-held title of a character who now ranks as one of the strongest Avengers: Captain Marvel. After Carol Danvers took up the mantle of Mar-Vell in 2012, her former identity sat empty. That is, until 2015, when Kamala Khan, a Pakistani-American teen from Jersey City — and massive fan of Danvers — took up the name.

Kamala was co-created by editors Sana Amanat and Stephen Wacker, as well as writer G. Willow Wilson and artist Adrian Alphona, who crafted many of her earliest adventures. With Kamala in the lead, Marvel’s Ms. Marvel book sold out in stands — and topped the book market in trade paperbacks. Ms. Marvel collections have been nominated for six Eisner awards and won the Hugo Award for Best Comic in 2015. Kamala has joined the Avengers, and even become the leader of the teen superhero group known as the Champions.

Disney did not announce a release window for the series. Writer Bisha K. Ali (showrunner of Hulu’s 2019 Four Weddings and a Funeral series) is rumored to act as showrunner and write for the show, potentially confirmed by G. Willow Wilson tweeting her best wishes to Ali.

Marvel’s other Marvel Cinematic Universe shows announced for Disney Plus include The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, WandaVision, Hawkeye, and a What If? animated series.

According to Feige, the Ms. Marvel series will arrive after Hawkeye, which puts it around Winter 2021 or early 2022.
