Dungeons & Dragons movie may star Chris Pine

The Dungeons & Dragons movie, currently in production with Paramount, may have found its star. The Hollywood Reporter says that Chris Pine (Star Trek, Wonder Woman) will assume the lead role. Little else is known about the film, with has been in various states of production since at least 2015.

Pine came to prominence in 2009 with J.J. Abrams’ reboot of Star Trek, where he played the iconic role of James. T. Kirk. He’s also known for his work as Steve Trevor in Wonder Woman, where he plays opposite Gal Gadot in the title role. We’ll have an opportunity to see the pair working together again soon, when Wonder Woman 1984 premieres in theaters and on HBO Max.

Little is known about the D&D movie, which was previously in production with Warner Bros. That version of the film was to be set in the Forgotten Realms, which is the primary setting for the current 5th edition of the massively popular role-playing game. The Hollywood Reporter had no further information in their article, nor did it indicate what role Pine would be playing.

Filmmakers John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein are attached to direct, and wrote the latest version of the Dungeons & Dragons screenplay. Given Daley and Goldstein’s filmography (Spider-Man: Homecoming, Vacation, Horrible Bosses), it sounds likely that the new film with lean more comedic than the previous, more serious fantasy film based on D&D.

The previous D&D movie came out in 2005. Titled Dungeons & Dragons: Wrath of the Dragon God, it was widely derided by fans and critics alike. In 2016, Polygon spoke with Nathan Stewart, head of the D&D franchise at publisher Wizards of the Coast, about the current movie project.

“In terms of our standpoint,” Steward said at the time, “we’re really involved and super confident that it’s going to be the best D&D movie ever. Which is a really low bar.”

Reached for comment, Wizards of the Coast said it had nothing to share.
