Last April, Avengers: Endgame put a cap on a 22-movie run dubbed by Marvel Studios as The Infinity Saga. Millions showed up to theaters on opening weekend to see how the Avengers would deal with that ol’ troll Thanos, leading the blockbuster to record-breaking box office and months of discussion. A year later, we’re living in the polar opposite moment: A coronavirus pandemic has global audiences inside and major summer movie releases retreating to the fall and beyond. It’s a surreal moment, and maybe the perfect moment to revisit Endgame, which now serves as a reminder of what seeing a movie with a crowd can feel like.

Directors Joe and Anthony Russo agree. On Sunday night, the brothers took to Instagram to announce an Avengers: Endgame live-tweet event on April 27, commemorating the one-year anniversary of the film’s release.

“We will be LIVE tweeting throughout the entirety of the film and we will be LIVE on IG for the first hour,” the Russos wrote in their announcement. “We may even have a special guest popping by on IG.”

In the months after Avengers: Endgame, the Russos left no stone unturned in their post-mortem campaign, even explaining how Wolverine and the X-Men would have fit into a version of the movie. The launch of Endgame on Disney Plus also saw the release of deleted scenes and accompanying director’s commentaries, adding even more making-of backstory to the production. They also moved on from the movie: The Russos added a number of projects to their development slate, including an adaptation of Magic: The Gathering and the Chris Hemsworth vehicle Extraction, which hit Netflix this past weekend.

This is to say, whatever the Russos have left to say about Endgame will likely come out of the live-tweet. The event, and the closest thing most of us will experience to a rowdy movie theater for the next few months, begins Monday night at 7 p.m. ET.
