Breath of the Wild fans are trying to mount Sidon as fast as possible

Giddy up!

Every month, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild speedruns get a little stranger. Case in point, today we’ve got a new category of playthrough titled “mount%,” wherein runners try and ride every animal in the game. This includes standard creatures, like horses, but it also includes everyone’s favorite shark hunk, Sidon. After all, you do ride Sidon during a boss portion of the open-world adventure, so technically, he qualifies here too.

This hilarious concept was developed by speedrunning extraordinaire Joedun, who has previously made headlines for things like completing BOTW at 100% — with zero damage. In an email, Joedun explained that this was initially conceived as a Sidon-only challenge that popped into his head while taking on the damageless run. But, he said, it soon became clear that the only way to make it an official speedrun category that is recognized by the community was to flesh out some rules. It wasn’t long before he decided to include every type of mount, just to make things more interesting.

What’s cool about this speedrun category is that, as of this writing, it’s the only one that requires fans to do something with the Lord of the Mountain. The ethereal snow-white mount only appears in extremely specific conditions — once on the day of a waxing crescent moon. To make this work, Joedun had to figure out exactly what was going on under the hood. It can show up any time within those 24 in-game hours, and only if you’re not entirely in the Satori mountain region, Joedun says.

“Turns out the length of the time it spawns for is also random,” he said, which is why sometimes casual players will see the tricky horse despawn almost immediately after seeing it. It’s also the biggest “pain in the ass” during the run for this exact reason, he said during the video.

As an added bonus, the run’s release to the public is being commemorated with a friendly competition. Whoever gets the fastest mount% time by May 6th will win $100, though second and third place also get some cash for their troubles. Better yet, the announcement video breaks down the current route developed by speedrunners for the category, meaning that anyone taking this on won’t be starting from scratch. This of course includes an entire section dedicated to riding Sidon, the star attraction.

So far, Joedun has been able to finish the run just under an hour — but hopefully, others will be able to shave down that time soon enough.

The next level of puzzles.
