Digging through the Fallout TV series’ trailer and everything else we know about the show

War never changes, but TV adaptations do

Like the well-worn pieces of a power armor suit, the long-awaited Fallout TV series appears to finally be coming together. Initially teased back in summer of 2020, the live-action adaptation of the post-apocalyptic action RPG series is closer than ever and finally has a release date thanks to a teaser from Amazon Prime Video.

Details are currently scant when it comes to what the plot of the forthcoming series might be, but like the video game series, the TV series will be set in an retro-futuristic alternate future, several decade after a nuclear war between China and the U.S. has left most of the world an irradiated wasteland.

With that being said, here’s everything we currently know about the live-action Fallout television series:

The Fallout series will release next April

Fallout is set to arrive on April 12, 2024, according to the latest teaser from Prime Video. With Prime it’s likely that episodes will be released weekly after the premiere, but Amazon has yet to confirm the exact rollout.

Westworld creator and Fallout executive producer Jonathan Nolan will direct the first three episodes

Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, the duo behind Westworld are developing and executive producing the Fallout series and Nolan himself will be directing the first three episodes of the series.

“Fallout is one of the greatest game series of all time,” Joy and Nolan said in a statement at the time. “Each chapter of this insanely imaginative story has cost us countless hours we could have spent with family and friends. So we’re incredibly excited to partner with Todd Howard and the rest of the brilliant lunatics at Bethesda to bring this massive, subversive, and darkly funny universe to life.”

The writer of Tomb Raider and the executive producer of Portlandia will also helm the series

While Nolan and Joy will be executive producers on the Fallout show, the actual showrunner duties will fall to Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner. Robertson-Dworet is a screenwriter whose previous credits include co-writing the screenplay for 2018’s Tomb Raider starring Alicia Vikander and 2019’s Captain Marvel starring Brie Larson. Wagner’s credits include several notable shows including The Office, Portlandia, and Silicon Valley.

We know some of the Fallout cast and who they’re playing

Ella Purnell (Yellowjackets, Star Trek: Prodigy) is one of the leads of the upcoming Fallout series, along with Walton Goggins (Justified, The Righteous Gemstones). Purnell plays Lucy, a happy-go-lucky vault dweller who ventures forth from her vault into the waiting wasteland. Goggins plays a bounty hunting Ghoul who’s extra old thanks to radiation. According to Prime Video, he’s hiding something about his past.

Additionally, Twin Peaks’ Kyle MacLachlan plays Overseer Hank, Lucy’s father and the overseer for Vault 33, while Aaron Moten is a young recruit to the Brotherhood of Steel, who’s learning the ropes of the organization.

The series is set in Los Angeles and won’t directly adapt the games

The series is set in the same continuity as the games, but won’t directly adapt any of their stories.

It will, however, be set in Los Angeles, which plays an important role in Fallout lore. While the first two games were set in California, players didn’t directly visit LA. That means this is the first time we’ll get to see what the irradiated metropolis will look like, and likely the first time in the series we will see someone visit the Vault-Tec headquarters there.
