See Fantastic Four #1’s beautiful cover variants, illustrated by Marvel legends

After a three-year hiatus, they’re back in style

Marvel Comics announced in March that it would be begin a new run of The Fantastic Four headed up by Dan Slott and Sara Pichelli. This week, not only are the Fantastic Four coming back after a three-year hiatus, but they’re coming back in style. Marvel Comics is releasing Fantastic Four #1, which hits shelves (both physical and digital) on Wednesday, with a full set of variant covers illustrated by artists ranging from Fantastic Four veterans to seasoned artists.

The first four variant covers feature solo images of the Human Torch, the Invisible Woman, Mr. Fantastic and the Thing illustrated by Stanley “Artgerm” Lau, who has produced covers for both Marvel and DC Comics. Other cover art features illustrations by Eric Powell, creator of The Goon; John Cassaday, a long-running comics artist best known for his work on DC’s Planetary; Esad Ribić, a seasoned Marvel artist who will be creating the covers for the remainder of the series; Sara Pichelli, the artist launching this new run of the series; Alex Ross, an artist known for his cover work; and Joe Quesada, the chief creative officer of Marvel Entertainment.

The series also includes cover variants from legendary Fantastic Four artists, including the late Mike Wieringo, whose variant depicting Mr. Fantastic and the Invisible Woman was illustrated in 2006. Fantastic Four veteran Walt Simonson, who served as both writer and artist during a run of the comic in the late ’80s and early ’90s, also illustrated a cover variant. In total, Marvel’s publishing over 30 variant covers for the release.

Fantastic Four #1 will be available on Aug. 8 for purchase. In the meantime, check out some of the cover variants in our gallery below.
