Lois Lane on the cover of Lois Lane #1, DC Comics (2019). Mike Perkins/DC Comics

Lois Lane is taking on the Trump administration

The reporter comes out swinging, plus more of the week’s best new comics

Susana Polo is an entertainment editor at Polygon, specializing in pop culture and genre fare, with a primary expertise in comic books. Previously, she founded The Mary Sue.

Lois Lane #1 hit this week, with a big dose of topicality. Writer Greg Rucka and artist Mike Perkins closed the first issue of their run with a scene in the White House press corp, complete with a thinly veiled amalgamation of Kellyanne Conway and Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

And in the same way that her husband might punch a cosmic monster so hard it flies into space, the Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter rhetorically pummeled the press secretary over her discovery that the administration of the president was profiting from family separation policies in American refugee camps. But that’s not the only big superhero news out there.

Welcome to Polygon’s weekly list of the books that our comics editor enjoyed this past week. It’s part society pages of superhero lives, part reading recommendations, part “look at this cool art.” There may be some spoilers. There may not be enough context. Let’s start the whirlwind tour!

The Immortal Hulk #20

Hulk and Fury in The Immortal Hulk #20, Marvel Comics (2019). Al Ewing, Joe Bennett/Marvel Comics

This will seem improbable to anyone who’s read the first arc of The Immortal Hulk, but the series is only getting weirder and better.

Teen Titans: Raven

Raven in Teen Titans: Raven, DC Comics (2019) standing in front of a mirror with her head down, and a raven spirit reflected around her. Image: Kami Garcia, Gabriel Picolo/DC Comics

I’ll be honest: Teen Titans: Raven is the first of DC’s YA graphic novels that really caught me, and I look forward to Kami Garcia and Gabriel Picolo’s follow ups, starting with Beast Boy.

Batgirl #36

Batgirl and Vulture in Batgirl #36, DC Comics (2019). Mairghread Scott, Paul Pelletier/DC Comics

I love this vulture lady, and I love how the Batgirl and Nightwing series have recently canonized the apparently routine existence of anthros in the DC Universe with absolutely no explanation of how they come to exist or why they all seem to live only in Gotham and Blüdhaven.

The Wild Storm #24

Apollo and Midnighter in The Wild Storm #24, DC Comics. Warren Ellis, Jon Davis-Hunt/DC Comics

It’s not often that your favorite slightly-dated series gets a modern reboot, and it’s not often that it gets one from the creator that made them in the first place. The Wild Storm has been a ride, and I can’t wait to see what Warren Ellis does next with it.

Harley Quinn #63

Harley Quinn in Harley Quinn #63, DC Comics (2019). Sam Humphries, Ott Schmidt/DC Comics

I’m not a regular Harley Quinn reader but I dipped in for the Year of the Villain tie-in this week and really loved this one-shot story about Harley finding out that her mom has very bad cancer, rediscovering her childhood love of anime, and accidentally getting collected by the Grim Reaper who was really only there for the video store.

The Dreaming #11

From The Dreaming #11, DC Comics (2019). Simon Spurrier, Bilquis Evely/DC Comics

The Dreaming is a must-read for Sandman fans, absolutely gorgeous art, absolutely Sandman-ass story.

DCeased #3

Superman in DCeased #3, DC Comics (2019). Tom Taylor, Trevor Hairsine/DC Comics

With DCeased, Tom Taylor is showing off his chops for merging the darkest Comic Book Wackiness with solid emotional beats. Also, inventive ways to consider how superheroes would react to a techno-magic fast-zombie apocalypse.

Lois Lane #1

Renee Montoya as the Question in Lois Lane #1, DC Comics (2019). Greg Rucka, Mike Perkins/DC Comics

Yes, Lois Lane #1 had Lois basically taking on the Trump presidency — but it was also funny, smart, super sexy and heartwarming in its treatment of her marriage, and it brought back RENEE FUCKING MONTOYA AS THE QUESTION.

Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III #3

Thomas, Martha, and Bruce Wayne in Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III #3, DC Comics (2019). James Tynion IV, Freddie E. Williams/DC Comics/IDW Comics

If you’re not reading the Batman/TMNT crossovers you’re missing out.

Superman: Up in the Sky #1

Superman in Superman: Up in the Sky #1, DC Comics (2019). Tom King, Andy Kubert/DC Comics

Andy Kubert is just slamming it out of the park in this book.

Doom Patrol: Weight of the Worlds #1

Corban the Orb God in Doom Patrol: Weight of the Worlds #1, DC Comics (2019). Gerard Way, James Harvey/DC Comics

All hail Corban the Orb God. All hail.

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #46

Loki, Nancy, Squirrel Girl, and Norse squirrel god of chaos, Ratatoskr, in The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #46, Marvel Comics (2019). Ryan North, Derek Charm/Marvel Comics

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl always does the best references to current crossovers.

The Magnificent Ms. Marvel Annual #1

Captain Miracle in The Magnificent Ms. Marvel Annual #1, Marvel Comics (2019). Magdalene Visaggio, Jon Lam/Marvel Comics

The prize for Best Veiled Reference to That Other Comics Universe goes to the Ms. Marvel annual.

Crowded #7

From Crowded #7, Image Comics (2019). Christopher Sebela, Ro Stein, Ted Brandt/Image Comics

Crowded is back. Crowded is great.

Sea of Stars #1

From Sea of Stars #1, Image Comics (2019). Jason Aaron, Dennis Hallum, Stephen Green/Image Comics

Sea of Stars, co-written by Jason Aaron (Thor, Avengers) is off to a nice start — parallel stories of a boy exploring his new artifact-given powers and space friends ... while his dad desperately searches the galaxy for him. At this point I’ll buy issue #2 just so see more of that art.
