After controversial voting, these are the 2020 Eisner Award winners

Some feel the Oscars of comics comes with an asterisk this year

Susana Polo is an entertainment editor at Polygon, specializing in pop culture and genre fare, with a primary expertise in comic books. Previously, she founded The Mary Sue.

Every year, comics professionals gather at San Diego Comic-Con for the Eisner Awards, American comics’ biggest and fanciest bash. The ceremony honors artists, writers, academics, journalists, and more for their contributions to the industry — and this year, with the convention itself being held online, we could all attend the Eisners.

The road to the 2020 ceremony has been a rocky one for reasons unrelated to coronavirus-related cancellations. This year’s round of voting has been plagued by doubts in the veracity of Comic-Con International’s tally, after the Eisners’ online voting portal appeared to reveal the personal information of voters to users, and potentially the public.

Some voters found that they had access to another voter’s profile, including their personal information, sometimes even before they had actually logged in. And, in addition to the obvious privacy concerns, users could edit the already submitted votes of these profiles. In late June, Comic-Con International shut down the Eisner voting portal, extended the deadline to submit votes, and reopened the portal several days later. But many Eisner voters say they were never notified about the change, or that their credentials were excluded from the portal during the second voting window.

For a detailed breakdown of why many are casting doubt on this year’s Eisner voting, check out The Beat. And for a look at this year’s Eisner winners, some of whom are accepted their awards with a measure of doubt, read on.
