It’s not a standalone movie trilogy, but Star Wars fans finally got their Boba Fett revival. The character returned to franchise canon in The Mandalorian season 2, he’ll get his own live-action show in late 2021, and as revealed by Marvel on Tuesday, the Son of Jango will soon lead is own comic series for the first time.
StarWars.com broke the news that Marvel Star Wars writer Charles Soule would take on the character in the new miniseries War of the Bounty Hunters. The story is set directly after the capture of Han Solo in The Empire Strikes Back, and is described as “an epic crossover in the Merry Marvel tradition.” The event will team Soule up with Greg Pak (Darth Vader), Alyssa Wong (Doctor Aphra), and Ethan Sacks (Bounty Hunters).
“The main story that we’re dealing with is a Boba Fett-focused crime epic, that involves Boba Fett going up against some of the heaviest hitters in the galaxy. It’s Jabba the Hutt. It’s Black Sun. It’s Darth Vader. And a bunch of others — factions and so on — that I think will be really interesting for the fans,” Soule tells StarWars.com in a new interview. “It’s basically Boba Fett, by himself, against all of these people.”
Fett is no stranger to comics, having appeared in Star Wars: Dark Empire II and several one-shot adventures in the 1990s, courtesy of Dark Horse, and another one-shot in 2019 as part of Marvel-Disney’s overhaul of the property. Soule has been instrumental in that effort. Starting in 2016, the writer penned a standalone Poe Dameron series, followed by a Darth Vader book, and a Kylo Ren miniseries. In 2020, he shifted his focus to Marvel’s flagship Star Wars comic. With JJ Abrams’ sequel trilogy now in the can, Marvel Comics have gone to great lengths to connect the dots of lore — which is why Vader just met The Eye of Webbish Bogg during the Empire Strikes Back timeline. Now Fett will have his own transformative moment.
On top of the comic series, Fett will also return to screen in 2021 in The Book of Boba Fett. Actor Temuera Morrison, who played the character alongside Pedro Pascal on The Mandalorian season 2, will resume his role as an aging bounty hunter who, based on the post-credit scene, descends upon Tatooine to shake things up at Jabba’s Palace. The show is due in December.
War for the Bounty Hunters will arrive just before hand. Kicking off in May 2021, the series is expected to run through October.
“War of the Bounty Hunters is a story about Boba Fett doing his thing, but it builds into something much bigger, and that’s what the best comic crossovers and big stories do,” Soule says. “They tell a great story in and of themselves, but they’re also the start of something, and they open a lot of new doors. And this story will absolutely do that.”
