Tips for jumping into Forsaken, Destiny 2’蝉 new expansion

Getting back in can be hard, so here are a few pieces of advice to ease your experience

Bungie/Activision
Ryan Gilliam (he/him) has worked at Polygon for nearly seven years. He primarily spends his time writing guides for massively popular games like Diablo 4 & Destiny 2.

Destiny 2: Forsaken is the next chapter in one of last year’蝉 best games. But after a tumultuous year, plenty of fans have left Destiny by the wayside. With all the quality of life changes and new content coming in Forsaken, it’蝉 a great time for lapsed players to jump back in — or so Bungie hopes.

With any new expansion in a complex loot game like Destiny 2, many things change, and it can be overwhelming. While we have plenty of coverage on what you need to know going in, there are still some tips that can help you, and will make the stressful decisions you’ll need to make on day one a bit easier.

In this guide, we’ll teach you how to pick a Super, how to pick up new events quickly and which items you should be holding onto.

1. Pick the right Super for the job

The new Super system in Forsaken is a bit different, in that you can choose the order of super you want. There are a total of nine new supers, three for each class. You’ll be given a quest fairly early in Forsaken that will lead you to your first new Super, then you’ll have to do another longer quest to get the next one.

Choosing wisely is going to be the name of the game in Forsaken, so you have to pick what is most appealing to you first. Are you a big raider? Pick the most utility-focused Super that your class has access to. Do you love PvP? How about just running Flashpoints? Pick a subclass that looks like it’ll be fun or useful to you based on the way you spend your time on in Destiny, because we aren’t sure yet how long it’ll take you to get that second one.

2. Hold onto everything

The new random roll system means that every weapon could be a hidden gem, even if you don’t particularly like the archetype. Based on past habits, you may start deleting things en masse when Forsaken launches. But keep in mind that a meta hasn’t been established yet.

If you plan on running strikes, preparing for the raid or kicking ass in Crucible, hold off on deletion for several days. As much as you may want to clear your inventory space, that weapon that you never gave the time of day could be the new Better Devils tomorrow. Thankfully, Bungie increased the storage space in the vault to 500, so you should have plenty of room now.

Be patient and hold onto everything for a bit. You’ll thank us later.

Bonus tip: Installing a web-based inventory manager like Destiny Item Manager will save you some serious time in Forsaken, and makes throwing unwanted items in the vault that much easier.

3. Think before you infuse

After a year of Destiny 2, everyone has their own favorite gun in their vault or inventory — even if you’ve been away for quite a while. You may be tempted to boost that Sunshot up the second you get something better, but hold off until you’re farther into the expansion.

First, infusing goes against tip #2, since you’ll have to make your old gun eat a new one. But the new infusion system is also much more expensive than it was in the past. The opening days of an expansion are for trying the new guns and armor pieces. Don’t sweat it if you haven’t found something you like as much as your Ghost Primus. Give the expansion a few days to sink in and then consider what you want to start using on a regular basis before you start boosting things up.

Infusion also works a bit differently in Forsaken. You’ll now need planetary materials — Phaseglass Needles, Alkane Dust, etc. — to infuse certain guns, making the task a bit more expensive. However, the more like your gun is to the one it’蝉 being infused into will make the process cheaper. For instance, if you want to infuse your more powerful Better Devils into one that has better perks on it, it’ll only cost you some Glimmer to do so. Thankfully, infusion can now be done per slot, so you can infuse anything in the second slot into anything else — they no longer need to be the same type of weapon.

This same tip should be applied to the masterwork system, something that was added in Destiny 2’蝉 Warmind expansion and is changing in Forsaken. Essentially, you’re able to use Masterwork Cores to upgrade your weapons gradually, giving them better stats and letting you track your kills made with them. But this is a late-game pursuit, so hold off on this until after you’ve collected the guns you like most.

4. Always be collecting

By the end of Destiny: The Taken King, we all had more Wormspore than we could possibly do anything with. But getting there was a journey. The new resources in Destiny 2 — as well as the old ones, considering the game’蝉 new economy — will be crucial to your early success in Forsaken.

When a new expansion comes out, it’蝉 easy to just try and rush through it. But taking time to stop and get chests is crucial in a loot game like this. Grab resources as you go, so you don’t have to come back and grind it later.

We won’t tell you to stop and smell the flowers while you play, but maybe consider picking some and stuffing them in your inventory for later.

5. Don’t forget your bounties!

In the weeks leading up to Forsaken, Bungie added bounties to Destiny 2. If you didn’t play the original, bounties are like miniature challenges that you can complete out in the world and then turn them in for resources or experience. These are usually objectives that you can easily complete while running around the world, so it’蝉 best to grab them at the start of your day and go from there.

Bounties come from planetary vendors, as well as Zavala, Shaxx, Hawthorne and even Tess. If you’re planning on playing for a while, make the rounds and grab them, but only if you’re actually planning on getting them done. Bounties cost a bit of Glimmer nowadays, so if you aren’t planning on visiting Io today, no need to go grab Asher’蝉 bounties.

Destiny is all about being efficient, so grab bounties first and reap the rewards later.

6. Your weapons have moved, but don’t panic

The new weapon system is very complicated, or so it might seem at first. When you log in, you’ll find that everything has moved around a bit. You can now put shotguns, fusion rifles and sniper rifles in your top two slots. These weapons, as well as single-shot grenade launchers and trace rifles, use (special) green ammo, while most other guns now use (primary) white ammo.

You can select two guns that use the same ammo type — if you ever get confused, there’蝉 a big logo next to the gun displaying the ammo type it needs — in your first and second slot, but they’ll use the same ammo pool. If you want to use a scout rifle and a hand cannon like the old days of Destiny 2, that should be fine because they both use primary ammo, which is very common. But you can technically use a shotgun and a sniper now as well, although you’ll run out of ammo very quickly. Aside from losing a few weapons, the power slot (rocket launchers, swords) hasn’t changed much.

But this new weapon system highlights a greater problem with jumping back into Destiny 2: Everything seems slightly different. Follow the habits we’ve laid out here and you should be fine. Like with all things, Destiny 2: Forsaken will take time to understand — even for those of us who never stopped playing. A new expansion puts everyone on the same footing, so don’t worry too much if you’re panicking about how new everything looks. Engage with the systems you need to and come back to explore the others later.

Don’t forget: Pay attention to your fellow Guardians

The start of every expansion is filled with new secrets and strategies to learn. The Destiny community is also fairly willing to help new or lost Guardians. But communication can be hard, and if you aren’t on PC, there are limited ways to contact you. Look for the telltale signs of a Guardian trying to get your attention: shooting or punching you (see also: wildly aiming while looking at you, suspicious jumping).

Most of the time, this is another player telling you that you might be doing something wrong, not a malicious attempt to override the game’蝉 programming and turn on World PvP. This is especially true with public events. Learning how to turn a new public event into a heroic one takes time, but you can ease that process by watching before you shoot. If an allied Guardian is doing something you aren’t, follow their lead and see if you can assist, rather than going for the most straightforward solution. Worst case scenario, you’re both lost and end up wasting a bit of time.

You may also find that Guardians will try and get your attention if they’ve found a chest or something to help share with you. Destiny is best played with friends or but it’蝉 also playable with total randos. Just don’t panic if you get shot at, and make sure to turn on your local chat setting if you’re a PC player, so new friends can nudge you gently (hopeful) in the right direction.
