After years of development, the National Treasure TV show is finally happening. According to Deadline, the series has been greenlit and is heading to Disney Plus.
Rather than including the Nicolas Cage character, Benjamin Gates, the new series will star twenty-year old DREAMer Jess Morales, a new character to the National Treasure series, as she and her friends go on an adventure to find a lost treasure. Along the way, they’ll discover her mysterious family history. Of course, since this is a National Treasure series, there’s sure to be plenty of random riddles that can only be solved with an obscure U.S. history fact, and historical documents with hidden maps involved as well.
The series will be written by Marianne and Cormac Wibberley, the writers behind the first two movies, and directed by Mira Nair (Vanity Fair). The series has been given a 10-episode order, which could either constitute its entire run, or may just be a first season.
Meanwhile, in another part of the National Treasure extended universe, the franchises’ third film also remains in development. The film is still planned to star Nicolas Cage, who also led the first two movies, and as of January 2020 is set to be written by Chris Bremner (Bad Boys For Life).
