Elden Ring’s Academy of Raya Lucaria is a treacherous Legacy Dungeon, populated by magic-wielding foes led by a brutally efficient boss. In this Raya Lucaria Academy walkthrough, we’ll show you how to defeat every enemy, find every item, and defeat Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon.
Table of contents
Entering the academy gate
In this section, we’ll find the South Raya Lucaria Gate site of grace, pick up the mysterious Meeting Place Map, and retrieve the Academy Glintstone Key.
Your first goal is reaching the Raya Lucaria Gate site of grace. There are two ways to get there: warping from the Purified Ruins and walking there from the Academy Gate Town site of grace.
From the Purified Ruins
The indirect path starts at the Lake-Facing Cliffs site of grace — the one you unlock when you enter Liurnia of the Lakes after Stormveil Castle. Take the path to the east of the lake, heading north on the road (it’s the Liurnia Highway) across the narrow strip of land.
Directly west of the Liurnia Highway North site of grace, you’ll find the Purified Ruins. Examine the contraption within, and you’ll warp right in front of the Raya Lucaria Gate site of grace.
From the Academy Gate Town site of grace
From the Academy Gate Town site of grace, head west while veering slightly north to reach heavily guarded steps that ascend toward walled academy grounds. Lure a couple of enemies to you at a time as you climb so you don’t get mobbed. Watch for foes with projectile magic.
After climbing the stairs, make your way along the ramparts leading north to reach the South Raya Lucaria Gate site of grace. You could just walk right up the middle of the area, fighting the awaiting hordes, but the path of least resistance is along the right side, near the railing. You’ll only face one knight, and it allows you to attack and loot the area from the rear after you reach the site of grace.
Past the South Raya Lucaria Gate site of grace, loot the corpse in front of the sealed gate for the Meeting Place Map, which points the way to an item that unseals the gate.
The island you need to investigate is located west of the academy, and it is guarded by a sleeping dragon. Sneak to the indicated area and check a sorcerer’s corpse nestled against some rocks near the dragon to find the Academy Glintstone Key.
Academy of Raya Lucaria map
The Main Academy Gate site of grace
At the South Raya Lucaria Gate, “Examine seal” to pass through the gate. The Main Academy Gate site of grace is directly ahead of you in an open plaza.
To the northeast (to the right in the image above), you can “Examine seal” and warp to the Bellum Highway region, next to the East Raya Lucaria Gate site of grace. Although it’s worth activating that shortcut, doing so won’t help you toward your current objective.
To the southwest (left in the image above) of the Main Academy Gate site of grace, take the lift that leads to the academy itself.
Let’s go left, and take the elevator up.
Into the Church of the Cuckoo
From the top of the lift, follow the statue-lined lane to reach a fountain on its far end. Check the foliage to its left for Trina’s Lily. Descend some steps and loot the corpse for Magic Grease.
Back at the fountain, head through the gates and up some stairs to two Raya Lucaria Sorcerer enemies. Open the door behind them and pass through it to reach the Church of the Cuckoo, where a sorcerer waits near an altar. Marionette enemies hang from the chandeliers along the center aisle, and from additional chandeliers near the chamber’s sides.
After clearing out the enemies, check behind the altar where the sorcerer stood to find the Somber Smithing Stone . To the right of the altar in an alcove, a Golden Rune rests on a corpse.
To the right from the church’s entrance, attack the wall to make it melt away and reveal a hidden corridor. Cross to the far end of the room to find a Rune Arc.
When you are ready, continue through the archway along the chamber’s left side to enter a hallway. Veer immediately left to find a summoning pool and the Church of the Cuckoo site of grace.
The Academy Graveyard
In this section, we’ll make our way through the graveyard and end with the next site of grace.
Head back along the hallway, past the door leading into the church, and descend some steps to reach the edge of the Academy Graveyard. The slow-moving skeletons hug you and steal your magic energy, so don’t let them get close unless you are stabbing them.
Keep to the left and follow a rocky ledge to the left of some gravestones and the main pathway. Battle some skeletons along that route, and then check the corpse near the edge of the ledge for Grace Mimic x3.
Return to the graveyard entrance, and this time head down the main trail. Past the base of the rock ledge you followed a moment ago, veer left off the trail and descend to reach some tombstones where you will find the Spellproof Dried Liver resting on a corpse surrounded by more skeletons.
To the right from there, and you’ll see a rope suspension bridge. Before you cross the bridge, head around the stone building to its right to spot some tombstones with plants growing between them. Pass through the foliage to follow a hidden rock ledge and reach a corpse with the Smithing Stone .
Across the suspension bridge
Now return to the rope suspension bridge and cross to its far side. Navigate this next area carefully, since it is filled with a variety of enemies.
Before you start through that space, veer sharply left from the bridge. Drop to a lower area to find a Marionette enemy, and past that another Marionette. They are guarding a corpse that holds the Marionette Soldier Ashes.
You can drop down from the ledge. Directly ahead, near the base of the tree, pillage the body for a Silver-Pickled Fowl Foot. Be careful of more skeletons and several hounds as you follow the trail leading uphill.
Keep to the right, and you will find a lower ledge you can drop to, where three skeletons are waiting near a tombstone with the Carian Knight Helm, Carian Knight Armor, Carian Knight Gauntlets, and Carian Knight Greaves. You can sneak up on the skeletons and kill them one at a time without sounding the alarm. Then you should turn around and scale the trail ascending right along the base of the cliff.
As you climb, ignore the opening leading left and proceed to the end of that trail. There you will find a corpse with the Golden Rune. Now backtrack and head through that opening to arrive at a high ledge overlooking the area with the tombstones.

- Kill the scarab, and get the Ash of War: Spectral Lance. Image: FromSoftware/Bandai Namco via Polygon
Continue uphill and check the corpse to your right as you ascend to find Magic Grease x2. Beyond it, a skeleton and its dog wait near a building’s entryway. Defeat them but don’t enter the archway they were guarding just yet. Instead, head downhill to the left and contend with another dog. Past it, you’ll find a Teardrop Scarab you can destroy for the Ash of War: Spectral Lance.
If you descend further along that slope, you will also find Golden Rune resting on a corpse. Then you should head back uphill and proceed through the opening that the skeleton and dog were guarding.
Through the corridor, and up the lift
Once you pass through the corridor, you will see a large mechanical wheel to your right that powers a lift. You can proceed forward a short way and then catch the lift to higher ground. For now, that’s what you want to do while ignoring the stairs that lead directly ahead (you’ll return to them in a bit). Ride the lift to its top and be ready to jump to a rock ledge to the left, where a skeleton enemy waits.
Defeat that enemy, then follow the ledge back in the opposite direction, where you will see another open area with a skeleton digging in the soil. There are items in this area, but for now you should go ahead and move past the skeletons and through the building archway to find the Schoolhouse Classroom site of grace checkpoint. It has been some time since you saw one of those. There is also a summoning pool.
Schoolhouse Classroom site of grace
Now that you have a convenient checkpoint secured, it’s time to backtrack for some items and an encounter that you skipped over a moment ago.
From the Schoolhouse Classroom site of grace, head back the way you came. As you emerge from the building, head left along the grassy trail to find an enemy with a torch looking out at the wheel platform you ascended a moment ago. To the right along that slope, there is an opening where you can pillage a corpse for the Golden Rune.
Now return downhill to the main building, and start toward the lower ledge where you saw the skeleton digging in the soil. Defeat him, then enter the cave and kill two more skeletons. Check the corpse in the alcove positioned to their left for the Crystal Dart x5.
Next, continue downhill and back along the rock ledge with a waiting enemy. Defeat him, and then jump onto the wheel platform. Ride it down and jump off on a new rock ledge to the right when it comes within reach. Then proceed ahead and to the left. You will see a trap: numerous skeletal remains on the ground, with glowing lights to indicate loot. Some of the skeletons are alive, though. Defeat the enemies (using ranged attacks where possible), then check the glowing points to find Golden Rune and Avionette Soldier Ashes.
With that loot acquired, head back the way you came to reach the wheel platforms again. Although it could be an exceedingly bad idea at this time, you can optionally ride a platform down to the lowest level of the area. This course of action is not recommended, despite the quality of the available loot. A tough Pendulum Statue hunts you as you attempt to collect two noteworthy items from the nearby corpses: the Smithing Stone (near the center of the area just below the wheel device) and the Longtail Cat Talisman (near a rock wall along the edge of the area).
Pendulum Statue warning
If you allow the surprisingly speedy Pendulum Statue enemy to catch you, it’s fatal. You will die and then revive in the remote Volcano Manor region. You must then travel through a tunnel past dangerous foes to reach the Subterranean Inquisition Chamber site of grace, which you might otherwise not explore for quite some time. You are a prisoner and therefore unable to warp back to the academy or anywhere else.
Rather than heading to the bottom of the wheel platforms, it makes more sense to ride the device to its highest point and jump to a ledge with some stairs you previously avoided on your way to the Schoolhouse Classroom site of grace.
When you climb that wide staircase, you’ll encounter a challenging enemy. Use ranged attacks and keep a distance to chip away at its life meter, but the monster will eventually turn the fight into a close-quarters affair. Roll away from gravity attacks that put you at risk of falling to its wicked blade. When you defeat your foe, it drops Gravity Well.
Nearby, you will also find a Somber Smithing Stone. You have to jump up to the platform, which is easiest if you approach it from behind. Then you are ready to return to the Schoolhouse Classroom site of grace to continue progressing.
The Great Hall
With your backtracking out of the way, you can venture into the challenging Great Hall area. There is a summoning pool directly ahead of it, right near the Schoolhouse Classroom site of grace. Through the door, you may see some sorcerers patrolling.
To the left
Start into that room cautiously, due to the numerous enemies. Tend to the nearest one by hitting it from behind when it isn’t looking your way. Then head left to a dead-end chamber that holds a body with a Conspectus Scroll. There also is a chest with the Glintstone Craftsman’s Cookbook .
You’re not done looting the place just yet. Strike the wall behind the corpse to make it disappear and reveal a passage. It leads to a balcony with another corpse just to your right that holds the Smithing Stone . Then head to the left side of the balcony to find a railing you can jump over to land on a narrow pathway. It leads to a couple of Trina’s Lily materials.
Just past where you gathered the lilies, there is a pile of boulders leading to a higher ledge. Ascend the boulders to reach that ledge, then run along it to find a corpse. Investigate the corpse to acquire the Olivinus Glintstone Crown. Then you can drop to the left and easily return to the Schoolhouse Classroom site of grace.
From the site of grace, head forward to the hall again, and this time veer right. There are several groups of sorcerers along this route, so proceed stealthily to eliminate some of them with surprise critical attacks. Near the end of the corridor, there are four sorcerers and a Living Jar enemy just left of the head of the stairs. You don’t want to fight that many enemies at once. Lure the jar toward you and backtrack along the hallway so you can defeat it without the sorcerers noticing. It drops the Raw Meat Dumpling and the Living Jar Shard. Grab the shard and then head back up the steps to tend to the sorcerers. One of them is likely to drop the Academy Glintstone Staff upon being defeated. Open the chest the sorcerers were guarding for the Ritual Pot.
Head up the next staircase, which is on the opposite side of the hallway where the Living Jar was positioned. At the top of the stairs, defeat several more sorcerer enemies on all sides of the chamber (including one on the stairs overhead that spots you as you make your approach). This is a chaotic scene, so play it smart. After the carnage, check the left side of the balcony to find the Furcalling Finger Remedy resting on a corpse.
Now look back the way you came and climb the stairs where the sorcerer tried to ambush you. At the top, you will see a door with mist in it that leads to a miniboss encounter. Before you pass through that, though, head left and hack the first bookshelf. You’ll reveal a hidden passage. Follow that passage to reach a treasure chest that holds the Comet spell. There also is a corpse behind the altar that yields the Stonesword Key.
Turn back the way you came and you’ll see a ladder you passed upon first entering the hidden room. Climb it to reach a ledge on the upper level. Follow that ledge to reach a wooden balcony. Along its back side, there is a painting turned sideways between stacks of books. You can cross over the painting and drop through a hole to arrive in a narrow chamber. Here, drop through a hole to the right to reach a chamber with pot-shaped enemies you should defeat before grabbing the Graven-School Talisman.
Now you exit the room to arrive in familiar territory. Follow the stairs back up to the boss doorway and enter it when you are ready for a difficult battle with the Red Wolf of Radagon.
Red Wolf of Radagon boss fight
— By Mike Rougeau
Imagine that you finally get your invitation to Hogwarts, but when you arrive, everyone wants to kill you, and you have to fight hellhound form Sirius Black to the death instead of finding out that he’s your wrongfully accused estranged godfather. That’s Elden Ring’s Raya Lucaria Academy, and we’re here to help you defeat the legacy dungeon’s first boss, the Red Wolf of Radagon.
Preparing for the fight
The Red Wolf is the mid boss of Raya Lucaria, but depending on your stats and loadout, might actually be harder than the academy’s main boss. It has a few different types of attacks, and unleashes them in unpredictable ways, making this one tough puppy to properly deal with. Thankfully, there are a few things you can do to prepare.
There are several useful items just lying around the academy for you to grab, although they’re fairly well hidden. For armor, nab the Carian Knight set, as there’s a good chance that it’s better than whatever you’re currently wearing. Find it near the Church of the Cuckoo site of grace.
Venture through the graveyard like normal, but just before you reach the entrance that takes you to the large lift, look to your right over the ledge, and jump down toward the three zombie-things kneeling at the large tombstone. The armor has fairly high magic defense for its weight category, and it’s light enough that you can probably incorporate pieces (or all) of it into your loadout without passing the threshold into “heavy load” territory, where your dodge roll will become significantly slower.
If you’re too close to that equip load threshold to equip anything new, you should pay a visit to the Roundtable Hold, where you’ll be able to pick up the Arsenal Charm from Nepheli Loux in the library — if you spoke to her at Stormveil Castle and summoned her for the Godrick fight. This talisman is incredibly useful, as it raises your maximum equip load, allowing you to wear heavier gear without slowing your movements.
Lastly, if you’re a spell-caster, grab the Graven-School talisman. Offensive spells won’t help you much against the Red Wolf, which has high magic resistance, but there are still some sorceries you might want to cast during this battle, like Scholar’s Shield, which will improve your ability to block the Wolf’s attacks as long as it’s active. The talisman is behind a false wall just shy of the Red Wolf’s boss fog gate (along with a powerful spell that you probably can’t cast yet).
The Scholar’s Shield enchantment spell, meanwhile, is available from Sellen, a spell vendor located underground at the Waypoint Ruins in western Limgrave.
Lastly, if you don’t already have the Spelldrake Talisman, head to the Earthbore Cave dungeon on the Weeping Peninsula, the landmass south of the Bridge of Sacrifice in Limgrave, and defeat the boss there to get it. Equipping it will increase your defense against the Red Wolf’s powerful magic attacks, so it’s well worth the trip.
Learn the Red Wolf’s attacks
The Red Wolf of Radagon has some truly mean attacks, and he likes to launch them in quick succession and in unpredictable sequences that can break your guard — and your spirit — faster than a glinstone arc kills penguins on the beach.
These attacks fall generally into three categories:
- Flame sword: The Red Wolf manifests a flaming sword in his jaws and swipes it at you. There are several versions of this, including a single slash, a double slash, a spinning slash that can hit you twice, a leaping slash with a long delay, and a triple combo that starts with two ground slashes and ends with a fast leaping attack. When the Wolf pulls this sword out, it’s almost impossible to predict which of these attacks he’s going to use, so it’s best to simply dodge and pray to the Erdtree.
- Bite: The Red Wolf lunges at you with his jaws. He almost always strikes twice. However, sometimes he adds a third bite after a short delay, so don’t try to get a hit in after two snaps. The third bite seems to be more likely to occur if you’re still in front of him after the second one. Count on that, pause for a moment, then dodge toward him, and get a strike in after the third bite.
- Magic: The Red Wolf has a few different offensive spells. His most common involves a flanking leap that summons glyphs in the air, which shoot you with a magic missile after a brief delay. It shouldn’t take you too long to get the dodge timing down on that, although things get tricky when he follows up with a close range attack after setting up the glyphs. The more dangerous spell by far involves a delayed leap into the air and a much larger missile that can potentially take out your entire health bar. If the Wolf jumps without summoning its flame sword first, be sure to dodge or get your shield up in time to block it (this is where that shield enchantment spell, Scholar’s Shield, comes in handy).
As far as damaging the boss back, you’re not going to have much luck with magic attacks, so don’t bother enchanting your sword with a spell like Scholar’s Armament. Similarly, if you’ve been pumping points into intelligence and your main weapon is doing magic damage, consider altering its damage affinity using the Ash of War system at a site of grace. You can always change it back once you’re done at Raya Lucaria.
You can also check your inventory for Fire Grease and coat your armament with it to cause the Wolf some extra damage. The cookbook that includes the recipe to craft it can be found in a bandit camp northeast of the Agheel Lake North site of grace back in Limgrave.
Summon, summon, summon
With a boss as tough as The Red Wolf of Radagon, there’s absolutely no shame in summoning help. There are no NPC summons available for this fight, but you can always open your multiplayer menu and use the Furlcalling Finger Remedy item to enable you to see other players’ summon signs. And don’t forget that you can use the Tarnished’s Furled Finger item to place your own summon sign, allowing you to help other players beat the boss in their own world, while getting to practice the fight without risking your runes.
With these strategies, you should be putting down this bad dog before long. Afterward, have fun exploring the rest of Raya Lucaria before taking on the second shardbearer, Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon, and claiming your second Great Rune.
The Debate Parlor site of grace
From the Debate Parlor site of grace, head forward through the doors and open gate, then immediately hang a right. Follow the balcony to its edge, where you can jump over the railing to reach a lower area. Proceed to that ledge’s far end and climb the ladder to find a broken window. Pass through it to arrive on the parlor’s upper level.
Start by heading left to find a corpse and the Crystal Bud x5. Then return to the broken window and head along the path that led to the right. There is a chest you should open to acquire the Radagon Icon.
Continue along the upper level, and there is a doorway leading right. Approach carefully, as a sorcerer waits directly ahead and another one is waiting to ambush you from the left. Defeat them and then look against the nearby wall to spot the Golden Rune resting on a corpse. Grab it, then head to the opposite side of the balcony to find a railing looking down to a lower area with a waiting sorcerer and some living pots. Drop down and carefully defeat the enemies, starting with the sorcerer, then check the nearby corpses for the Cracked Pot and the Living Jar Shard.
Travel left from where you destroyed the pots, and descend toward the edge of the courtyard, or reach it by heading along the corridor from the Debate Parlor site of grace. Jump up to the large fountain and check the waiting corpse to find a Stonesword Key. This courtyard area is dangerous in general, with few meaningful rewards to justify your risk.
The biggest threat is the rolling Pendulum Statue, which you can lure to your perch on the fountain. It can’t easily reach you on that high ground, and you can use the fountain’s central column for cover from its whirling blade projectiles and other attacks. Target your foe,gt and pelt it with projectile magic.
With the Pendulum Statue out of the way, check the north side of the courtyard for Glintstone Firefly x5. Then head through the arches beyond that point to find a precious Golden Seed resting beneath a glowing tree.
Beyond the glowing tree, a corpse rests out in the open beyond a few weak enemies. When you approach the corpse, a giant crab enemy emerges from the soil. Once you defeat that enemy, you check the nearby corpse for the Golden Rune . Nearby, a ledge leads along a wall to another corpse, which holds the Golden Rune .
Along the same side of the courtyard, follow a rocky outcropping from the glowing tree to find a point where you can descend a hill toward a weak enemy. Hiding in the nearby brush against the corner of the rock wall is a glowing blue crab. Hit it from a distance with sorcery to whittle away its life meter. Then check its corpse for the Karolos Glintstone Crown.
When you are ready to proceed beyond the courtyard, return to the Debate Parlor site of grace.
Head out through the gate and into the courtyard, then veer toward the left to find a slope of soil with some enemies digging near its base. You can climb this hill to reach the lowest point of the academy’s rooftops area.
There are numerous enemies waiting at the top of the slope, so tend to them as best you can and then investigate for nearby loot. Along a platform at the top of the stairs to the left, you will find the Golden Rune . Directly ahead as you first arrive on the scene, steps ascend to a higher balcony to the left of an open door. Enter the door first and check a corpse in a window to your right to find the Glintstone Whetblade. Then head up the steps.
To the left from the top of the steps, you can hop over a low railing and rush an approaching sorcerer while keeping in mind that a sorcerer also lurks on the steps behind you. Defeat them both. Next, open the door at the base of the stairs to establish a route to the courtyard so you can avoid fighting so many sorcerers on subsequent runs. Then head up the stairs and around the balcony to find a corpse with the Golden Rune .
From where you looted the body, hop over the rail to land on the tiled roofs nearby. Run along that surface to encounter some Marionette Soldiers. Just past those enemies, head right and leap to a narrow ledge. Head left from the base of the ladder and skirt the tower to find a corpse you can search for Golden Rune .
Return to the ladder and climb it to arrive at a rooftop lane. Eliminate the enemies here from a distance if possible, and check along the right side of the lane to find a corpse with the Crystal Dart x5. Then at the end of the lane, follow the ledge around the tower’s left side to find Meteor Bolt x5 on a corpse.
Drop to the tiled roofs to the left of where you found that item. As you continue, drop down along a few more roofs. Eventually, you reach some peaks where one Marionette Soldier is positioned against a wall to the right while another patrols directly ahead. Defeat them, then head to the end of the rooftop the patrolling enemy was guarding. You will find the Golden Rune on a corpse. Return to where the stationary guard was positioned and look to the right to see you can drop to another lower ledge.
Along that new ledge, head across the roof leading right to loot a corpse for the Imbued Sword Key. Next to that body, look to the side to see a small gap you can leap across to reach another ledge. Follow that ledge around to find the Smithing Stone x2. Then carefully return across the gap to the left. Follow the roof peak back to the narrow ledge and reach the top of a ladder on its right side.
Before descending the ladder, you may wish to dispose of a patrolling enemy on the next rooftop, provided you have magic to spare. Otherwise, wait for him to head away from you. Climb down the ladder and enter the room at its base to find some crabs. Defeat them, then grab the Somber Smithing Stone from a corpse. Return to the ladder and climb to its top. Now you’re ready to leap across to the next rooftop where you saw the enemy patrolling (and may have eliminated it from a distance).
Once you land safely on that next rooftop, head along its left side. In the distance, you can see the second of two peaked roofs extending to the left, with a glowing point. As you approach, two winged enemies descend in a surprise attack. Defeat them, then check the corpse for the Magic Grease x2. Backtrack to the main roof where the gargoyles just attacked and look along the wall to see open windows you can pass through, which lead to ceiling beams. Enter the leftmost one.
The beam you are positioned on connects with several other beams that extend between various walls in the building’s eaves. Head carefully along the beams leading toward your right to grab the Golden Rune from a body. Head just to the side and you can see the top of a chandelier and another beam, just below. Drop to the lower beam, then from there drop onto the chandelier and check the corpse for the Academy Glintstone Key.
Looking down from the chandelier where you grabbed that key, you will see an arch. Drop to it and defeat any nearby sorcerers and soldiers, then check the corpse leaning against the wall on the room’s opposite end to find the powerful Shattering Crystal sorcery. While you are in the area with the arches, check near the end of one to see the top of a ladder. Approach it and use the “Kick ladder” prompt to make the bottom half of the ladder drop, which creates a helpful shortcut to the Church of the Cuckoo site of grace.
While you are in this area, make your way to the open arch that leads along a corridor rather than to the outside balcony. A soldier stands near its far end. He fires lethal bursts of flame from his crossbow, so take steps to avoid that threat. You can lure him to you with sorcery projectiles, and then back out of the doorway to force him to come to you, at which point melee strikes may finish him before he can fire another burst. The corridor he guards grants access to a room covered in precious stones. A statue rests near its center, and Azur’s Glintstone Staff lies on the ground nearby.
Return to the main chamber, and you are almost done exploring the rooftops. Head through the arch that leads outside to a balcony area. There is some scaffolding to your right. Around the back side of that wooden structure, you’ll see a glowing crab. Defeat that enemy with sorcery or careful swordplay, and it drops the Twinsage Glintstone Crown. Collect it, and then warp to the Debate Parlor site of grace to continue your journey.
From the Debate Parlor site, head along the hallway into the courtyard area and then look right. You will see a long stairway descending toward the courtyard’s edge, with a corpse and a glowing light near its lowest point. Head through the courtyard while keeping toward the right side, where you can drop to one of the nearest platform arms that extend from the stairs. Then walk over them to cross to the stairs, but don’t hop over the rail just yet.
When you hop over the rail, that will cause a large metal ball to start rolling down toward you. It will crush you and cause significant damage if it comes in contact with you while following its zigzagging course of descent. If you mean to loot the body near the base of the stairs, or to climb to their top, you should let the ball roll past and then make your move. Head to the body near the lowest part of the stairs to grab the Smithing Stone . Up the steps again, look along one of the extensions to the left to find the Crystal Dart x8. Finally, there is a corpse in the middle area of the steps that you can check for the Furlcalling Finger Remedy.
Ascend the steps while avoiding the ball, and then enter the room at the top. The door to the left is locked, while the one to the right leads to a portal. Straight ahead, a path leads into the garden where you will need to do battle with Moongrum, Carian Knight. He is a powerful foe. If he gives you too much trouble, retreat back outside to the area where the large ball drops. Pelt him with spells to lure him after you. Then stand about where shown in the screen, which is safe from the ball and will let you launch more magic with minimal risk that your foe will damage you. He sometimes will even pass beneath where the ball drops himself, suffering significant damage. When you defeat your enemy, he gives up the Carian Knight’s Shield.
Head into the garden where you first saw Moongrum and look to the left. In that direction, start down a pathway but watch to your left for a surprise attack by a sorcerer and some friends. Defeat them and check the body to acquire Golden Rune . For now, continue down the pathway to a building. Inside it, you’ll find a door leading into the courtyard not far from the Debate Parlor site of grace.
Return uphill to the place where you found the Golden Rune a moment ago. Look to the rail and you will see a narrow ledge you can jump to that grants access to another of the building’s wings. In that next room, there are a ladder and a door. Open the door to create a shortcut to the room before where you battled Moongrum. Then climb the ladder and clear the room of enemies, including sorcerers and a powerful Mad Pumpkin Head.
If you have trouble dealing with everyone at once, lure the Mad Pumpkin Head toward you and you may get him to rush you and fall through the opening with the ladder, leaving you to face only a few sorcerers. Then you can pelt your final foe with magic from safety at the top of the ladder. He drops the Sanctuary Stone when defeated. Check the treasure chest the enemies were all guarding for the Glintstone Scarab, then head back down the ladder.
Now you’re ready to go to the boss. Pass through the door you opened a moment ago and head left to find the lift. Ride it to the top floor, where you can open the double doors to meet up with Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon.
Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon boss fight
— By Mike Rougeau
If you followed our guide for the Red Wolf of Radagon boss fight, then you’re probably fairly well prepared to take on Rennala. Several of these preparatory steps — especially the ones involving items you can find in and around Raya Lucaria academy — apply equally to both bosses.
Just as with the Red Wolf, we recommend using the Carian Knight Armor, as it has fairly high magic defense for its weight category, and it’s light enough that you can probably incorporate pieces (or all) of it into your loadout fairly easily. It’s available near the Church of the Cuckoo site of grace. Travel through the graveyard like normal, but just before you reach the entrance that takes you to the large lift, look to your right over the ledge, and jump down toward the three zombie-things worshipping at the large tombstone.
And if you summoned Nepheli during the Godrick fight but haven’t yet spoken to her in the Roundtable Hold since then, head back to the hub, and look for her in the library to earn the Arsenal Charm. This talisman is incredibly useful, as it raises your maximum equip load, allowing you to wear heavier gear without slowing your movements.
If you’re a magic user, chances are you grabbed the Graven-School Talisman, which raises sorcery potency, behind the false wall just before the Red Wolf’s boss room.
Now that you have access to the rest of the academy, you’ll want to go pick up the Radagon Icon Talisman, which improves the speed with which you cast spells.
You’ll find it in a hidden area just after the Debate Parlor site of grace. Head outside, hang a sharp right, and look for a spot where you can jump over a railing onto a ledge below.
As with the Red Wolf of Radagon, offensive magic won’t do you much good against Rennala. However, once you get to her second phase, it’s a good idea to enchant your shield with the Scholar’s Shield spell (available from Sellen in Limgrave’s Waypoint Ruins), which will help you tank through some of Rennala’s magic attacks by blocking.
If using this defensive spell isn’t an option for you, your best alternative is to equip Elden Ring’s Carian Knight Shield that you get from the hostile NPC who attacks you just before the elevator up to Rennala’s chamber, as it has higher-than-average magic damage negation.
And if you don’t have the Spelldrake Talisman, head to the Earthbore Cave dungeon on the Weeping Peninsula, the landmass south of the Bridge of Sacrifice, and defeat the boss there to get it. Equipping it will increase your defense against Rennala’s powerful magic attacks, so it’s well worth the trip.
Pure spellcasters may have trouble breaking through Rennala’s high magic defenses, but dexterity-focused characters won’t have any such problems, particularly if you’re using a weapon that causes bleed build-up (or blood-loss). This status effect works the same on some opponents as it does on you: Repeated strikes with a blood-loss-inflicting weapon causes the bleed meter to fill up, inflicting a massive chunk of damage when you get in enough attacks.
If you began the game as the Samurai or Bandit class, you already have a weapon that causes bleed. If you didn’t, you can easily get one.
Head to the shallow river that feeds Lake Agheel in Limgrave and fight the NPC invader who attacks you to earn the dagger Reduvia, or grab the flail from the broken-down black carriages at the Gatefront Ruins, also in Limgrave. Both of these weapons have fairly low stat requirements (although 13 arcane to wield Reduvia is a bit steep at this stage of the game, so we personally recommend the flail).
Furthermore, dexterity-focused players can head to the Castle Morne Rampart site of grace south of the Bridge of Sacrific at night and kill the mounted Night’s Cavalry boss to receive the super-sweet three-headed Nightrider Flail.
Learn the Rennala fight
The battle with Rennala comprises two distinct and very different phases.
Rennala’s first phase is gimmicky and easy, so we won’t go into too much detail. Basically, you need to jog around the room, avoiding flying books and candle flames, while striking the children who are maintaining their queen’s shield. They’re easily discerned by the golden aura around them. Once you hit or kill three of them, Rennala will fall from the sky, giving you the opportunity to damage her. This is where bleed comes in, as the status effect can make short work of her here, allowing you to complete this part of the fight in just two phases.
At the end of each damage phase, the Rennala will briefly glow, before unleashing a blast of energy. Be sure to dodge away before that happens. And use the brief pause after you take down her full health bar, but just before the second phase begins, to heal.
The Carian Queen’s second phase is considerably more challenging. She always opens this part of the fight by using Comet Azur, a big laser attack. Thankfully, you can easily avoid it by locking onto her and sprinting toward her, and then dodging to the side. This will also put you in a prime position to apply a buff, like Scholar’s Shield or Fire Grease, and start attacking her. The goal is to always get in close and attack with melee strikes. Jump attacks can keep her stunned, and even break her poise if used in succession, allowing you to do massive damage.
Rennala’s offensive spells, though varied, are generally easy to avoid. You should practice dodging through them. If magic bolts are slowly drifting toward you from right to left, wait until they get close, and then roll to your right, bypassing them entirely. And although the big laser looks intimidating, it’s actually a great opportunity to get in close and punish her every time she uses it, since there’s a long wind-up and it’s simple to dodge.
If you’re lucky, you can get through this entire fight without Rennala triggering any of her summons, which make things considerably more difficult when they arrive. The Elden Ring queen can spawn a large troll, a pack of wolves, a lithe Bloodhound Knight, and even a dragon, often in quick succession. When she does, it’s best to quickly focus damage on the summons while continuing to dodge Rennala’s spells, since they’ll usually die in a few hits, or even despawn on their own after several moments.
Fight summons with summons
Just like with other boss fights in Elden Ring, you can summon help by opening your multiplayer menu and using the Furlcalling Finger Remedy item to enable you to see other players’ summon signs. And don’t forget that you can use the Tarnished’s Furled Finger item to place your own summon sign, allowing you to help other players beat the boss in their own world, while getting to practice the fight without risking your runes.
Remember: The more players in the fight, the more health the boss will have. Keep that in mind as you take Rennala down, and make sure you’re getting as many hits in as possible during every opportunity to damage her.
With these strategies, Rennala should come back down to earth after no time. Defeating her will gain you another Great Rune, as well as the ability to respec your character’s stats.
After you defeat Rennala, she drops the Remembrance of the Full Moon item, as well as the Great Rune of the Unborn. The Raya Licaria Grand Library site of grace also activates.
