Keep your followers fed, healthy, and faithful in Cult of the Lamb

Here’s how to keep your cult functioning and your followers alive

Part of being a good cult leader in Cult of the Lamb is keeping your followers alive and engaged. If you want to keep things running smoothly, you’ll need to ensure your members stay fed, healthy, and faithful. You can check on the status of any of these in-game meters by opening the cult menu or looking toward the top left of your screen.

In this guide we’re going to teach you how to keep the hunger, faith, and sickness meters topped off at all times.

Hunger

Hunger is Cult of the Lamb’s trickiest problem. You can check on your cult’s hunger levels by looking at the little stomach icon in the top left of you screen.

To feed your cult members, you’ll need to cook for them at the Cooking Fire. Here, you’ll see a bunch of recipes you can make with the ingredients on hand. Many recipes, especially the early ones, could make cult members sick, or at least cause them to poop instantly —contributing to your cult’s mess and potentially making your followers sick, which we’ll get to later. Unfortunately, these are unavoidable early-game risks. You can mitigate these problems later with upgrades and better ingredients.

Selecting a recipe will preview how much it fills the stomach icon, indicating how well fed your cult will be after making it. Play the little mini-game to cook for your followers, being careful not to burn anything. This wastes resources and contributes to your cult’s mess.

Once the food is cooked, your followers will feed themselves. Make sure you cook for your followers before leaving for a Crusade, as those can stretch over multiple days.

In order to cook meals with fewer side effects, you need rarer ingredients. The first thing you want to unlock from your cult tree in Cult of the Lamb is the farming bundle. Once you have it, build the farm and start growing food as early as possible. As long as you keep up with your farm each time you come home from a Crusade, you shouldn’t run out of food.

If you do run out of food, you have a few options. First, you can feed your cult grass or poop. Both will cause illness, but it’s better than starvation. If you’ve unlocked it, you can also spend some bones to throw a feast ritual for your cult members, which will instantly feed them.

Faith

The largest meter you’ll need to maintain in Cult of the Lamb is your followers’ faith in you. Luckily, it’s actually not very much work to maintain.

Your followers will gain faith in a variety of ways. As long as you’re caring for them (doing their quests, making sure they have beds to sleep in, etc.) they’ll have faith in you. Of course, things happen over the course of the game to lower faith. Maybe you fail a follower quest, or an older follower dies. Or maybe you just don’t have enough food and your followers are miserable. All of this will effect the faith level in your cult.

So how do you restore the faith? First and foremost, you want to make sure you’re preaching a sermon every day. This is an easy, guaranteed way to regularly increase faith. You can also perform a series of rituals to help keep your followers in line. (Which rituals you have access to will differ depending on the Doctrines you preach). For example, I threw bonfires when my cult needed some faith, or used a ritual that gave them multiple days off. Once you complete a certain questline, you’ll also gain access to a psychedelic mushroom ritual which temporarily locks your followers faith at max.

While many rituals raise faith, some lower them as well. You can usually compensate for this by regularly preaching your sermons, but you can accidentally take the faith too low if you aren’t careful. When the faith is low, followers have a chance to dissent, preaching to the rest of the followers about your lies and lowering faith further. To fix this, you can throw the dissenter in prison and re-educate them or you can murder them via ritual sacrifice. Both ways are effective, but keep in mind that you’ll be out a follower if you go the murder route.

Sickness

The health of your followers is the easiest thing to maintain in Cult of the Lamb. In order to keep the health meter up, you really just need to walk around your compound and pick up poop, vomit, and any dead bodies hanging about. You can eventually automate this meter almost entirely with the outhouse building and the janitor building.

Even if you keep a squeaky clean cult, your followers will inevitably get sick at some point. You can fix this immediately by spending 10-15 Camellia flowers at the Healing Bay. (These are available from the Darkwood, the first Crusade area in the game). If you don’t have the flowers to instantly heal your followers, you can send them off to bed for a couple of days, where they’ll heal naturally. If you continue to work a follower while they’re ill, they eventually get so sick that they die.
