Russ Frushtick is the director of special projects, and he has been covering the world of video games and technology for over 15 years. He co-founded Polygon in 2012.

In the previously released Metroid game, Samus Returns, players were rewarded for their extreme diligence when finding every single item in each of the areas. For their trouble, they unlocked “Chozo Memories.” These art stills provided a backstory of the events that lead up to Samus Returns, specifically the infestation of the planet by the Metroids.

The developer behind that game, MercurySteam, also worked on the latest entry, Metroid Dread, and is continuing the Chozo Memories tradition once again with Chozo Archives. You’ll unlock a new image every time you find 100% of the items in each area of the game, as well as a bonus image once you’ve found them all.

To view Chozo Memories, go to the main menu. Then choose your save file and there should be a Gallery option available to you. You’ll get a notification like this whenever you’ve unlocked a new image:

These images are huge spoilers for the events of Metroid Dread and should only be viewed after completing the game (or deciding that you have no interest in tracking everything down). We’ll try to provide context for what’s going on in each image, but no official text is provided, so there is some guesswork here.

Chozo Archive 1

Here we see Dread’s antagonist, Raven Beak, making short work of one of the EMMI robots. It appears he’s removed its arm, with the likely intention of reprogramming it to capture Samus’ Metroid DNA. The setting is Artaria.

Chozo Archive 2

Raven Beak’s soldiers are enslaving poor Kraid and poking him with spears. It certainly would explain why he’s so grumpy when you face him later. The setting is Cataris.

Chozo Archive 3

Quiet Robe, the helpful Chozo you meet along your quest, is creating what looks to be a clone of Kraid, who you will later fight in the coolant core. Given that Quiet Robe is part of the Chozo tribe that created the Metroids in the first place, this certainly tracks. The setting is Dairon.

Chozo Archive 4

Raven Beak oversees the execution of Chozo warriors who may be fighting against his evil plan. Nice pecs, guys! The setting is Burenia.

Chozo Archive 5

A barechested Chozo standing over a defeated creature in the lush landscape of Ghavoran. Armored soldiers from Raven Beak’s clan watch on.

Chozo Archive 6

Raven Beak surrounded by his soldiers that have been infected by the X Parasite. He will later seal them in the vault of Elun.

Chozo Archive 7

Quiet Robe shows Ravenhow he has reprogrammed the EMMI robots to track down and secure Metroid DNA, thus making Samus their prime target. The setting is Ferenia.

Chozo Archive 8

Raven Beak stands, showing his armor in full glory, as his soldiers watch on. In the background we can see what appears to be Quiet Robe, realizing that perhaps he’s made a huge mistake in trusting this guy. The setting is Hanubia.

Chozo Archive 9

This archive is only unlocked after all the other memories are unlocked. Unlike the last game, this has no real implications for the future of the series, instead offering a glimpse at some of the friends and foes that Samus has made along the way.

The next level of puzzles.

Take a break from your day by playing a puzzle or two! We’ve got SpellTower, Typeshift, crosswords, and more.
