How to evolve Gimmighoul into Gholdengo

Who wants a shiny golden boy to show off their wealth? I do!

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet adds pretty silly collectable aspect when it comes to evolving Gimmighoul. You have to grab 999 Gimmighoul Coins by finding various Gimmighoul around Paldea.

This number may seem jarring in a vacuum, but it’s not as bad as it sounds, since there are tons of Gimmighoul around every corner.

Where to find Gimmighoul and Gimmighoul Coins

Gimmighoul are both the tiny bugs with coins on their backs and the chests you’ll find around ruins and towers. However, you can only catch Chest Form Gimmighoul.

The tiny version, referred to as its Roaming Form, cannot be caught. These can be found anywhere, but we found them a lot around ruins, Pokémon Centers, bridges, and signs. You’ll know a Gimmighoul is nearby as you will hear its cry (which kind of sounds like a stomach rumbling). Interacting with Roaming Form Gimmighoul causes it to flee, but it’ll drop anywhere from one to 200 Gimmighoul Coins, according to Serebii.net. Roaming Gimmighouls can also respawn pretty frequently, so make sure to check places you found them previously to get more coins.

Chest Form Gimmighoul drops way more coins, ranging anywhere from 30 all the way to 777 (if you’re lucky). However, there are set locations for these, and they have a much smaller chance to respawn every day. You’ll get the coins as long as you either defeat or catch the Gimmighoul in battle.

To farm coins, we just hunted Chest Form Gimmighoul down, but we also made sure to head over to some of the ruins on the map frequently to interact with respawned Roaming Form Gimmighoul there.

If you’re hunting for Chest Form Gimmighoul, Serebii.net has an incredible interactive map that points out their various locations.

How to evolve Gimmighoul into Gholdengo

To evolve Gimmighoul, you need 999 Gimmighoul Coins. This might seem like a lot, but as you pick up coins during your adventure around Paldea, they’ll pile up. (We had about 750 of them at the end of our journey, so we just hunted Chest Form Gimmighoul to make up the difference.)

Once you have 999 Gimmighoul Coins in your inventory, just level up your Gimmighoul to evolve it into Gholdengo. Doing this will consume 999 Gimmighoul Coins, so make sure to evolve one you like.

Correction (Nov. 29): A previous version of this guide stated that evolving Gimmighoul does not consume any Gimmighoul Coins in your inventory. Evolving Gimmighoul into Gholdengo consumes the coins. We’ve updated this guide to reflect this.
