Inhumans is probably dead, and ABC is unsure of future Marvel shows

‘It didn’t perform for us at the level that we would have wanted’

To say that Inhumans didn’t have the stellar reception and success ABC was hoping for would be an understatement.

The series faced poor ratings almost from its premiere, leaving 滨苍丑耻尘补苍蝉’ future in question. ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey addressed the show’s unsuccessful ratings during a television conference this week, admitting Inhumans did not perform as well as the network was hoping.

“It didn’t perform for us at the level that we would have wanted,” Dungey said, as reported by Deadline. “We haven’t made any official decisions yet but I will say the numbers were less exciting for us as we hoped they would be.”

Low ratings and critical disapproval may be enough for ABC to not renew the series. If Inhumans does get cut from the network, Agents of SHIELD may be the only Marvel series to air on ABC this fall. Dungey said the network is happy with Agents of SHIELD’s performance, but Deadline reports executives are waiting to hear pitches for the sixth season before choosing whether or not to renew.

As for other Marvel properties that were reportedly being discussed — including a Jessica Jones-like series — those shows may need to wait another year.

“We developed a couple things this season that we don’t think are going to end up going forward, so we’re going to look really carefully about what we do next,” Dungey said.

After losing out on other series in the ratings category, like Agent Carter, it makes sense that ABC would want to take time to rethink its approach to Marvel TV properties. Netflix currently has six Marvel series, and Disney is gearing up to launch its own stand-alone Marvel series in 2019, which will be exclusive to Disney’s new streaming service. Marvel also has multiple animated series on Disney XD.

To be blunt, Disney doesn’t need another Marvel property right now, and ABC is clearly looking into other avenues. More information is expected to be released in the coming months as the network starts ordering pilots and finalizing its fall slate.
