Get ready to mine for copper and tin

Unlike most of the resources you can gather in Valheim, you won’t find bronze laying around in the game. You have to make it. Just like in real life, creating bronze in Valheim requires combining two elements.

In this Valheim guide, we’ll show you how to make bronze. Creating it requires finding copper and tin and we’ll explain where to find their deposits. Then, we’ll explain the process for creating the material that you’ll use for creating bronze armor and weapons.

Items required to make bronze

If you’ve followed our guide on how to prep for The Elder boss fight, then you might have seen part of the process. Armor and weapons made out of bronze will be essential in that stage of the game.

The process to create bronze for few prerequisites. To make bronze, you’ll need:

  • Charcoal kiln (20 stone, 5 surtling cores)
  • Smelter (20 stone, 5 surtling cores)
  • Forge (10 wood, 4 stone, 6 copper)
  • Copper ore for copper bars
  • Tin ore for tin bars

Once you have all of these elements, you can combine copper bars with tin bars to make bronze at your forge. However, before you can even combine those resources together, you’ll need to craft several other key items first.

Where to find surtling cores

Crafting materials like stone, wood, should be pretty easy to find at this stage in the game. However, surtling cores require a bit of effort and danger to obtain.

You’ll need 10 surtling cores to build a charcoal kiln and a smelter, two key crafting stations required to make any metals. To find surtling cores, you have to locate burial chambers.

Burial chambers are small dungeons found in black forest biomes. Travel around the forest until you find one of these stone structures built around an entrance. When you’re close, you may encounter skeletons.

Before entering, craft a torch (1 wood,1 resin) to light your way through the dark chambers inside these crypts.

The burial chambers contain several winding hallways, wooden doors, and skeletons. Surtling cores are easy to spot. Just look for any glowing square objects on small stands.

You’ll need to raid several burial chambers for the 10 surtling cores that make a charcoal kiln and smelter.

Where to find copper and tin

Once you have the materials to make your charcoal kiln and smelter, you need to you need to find copper ore and tin ore. Then you’ll make copper bars and tin bars, which turn into bronze at a forge.

Copper deposits

Finding copper deposits can be a bit tricky. While roaming around a black forest biome, look for long, flat boulders. You’ll usually find them among the ground. They’ll stick out a bit. When you mouse over them, you’ll see if the rock you’re looking at is a “copper deposit” or not.

If you found one, break it down with a pickaxe to get copper ore.

Tin deposits

You can find tin deposits near the water in black forest biomes. Keep an eye out for any rocks that look shinier than the ones around them. The deposits also have black streaks across them.

Break these deposits down with your pickaxe as well, and you’ll get tin ore.

Create a charcoal kiln and make bronze

With your surtling cores plus the copper ore and tin ore, you can now craft a charcoal kiln and smelter. Together these items will make copper bars and tin bars.

Create a charcoal kiln (20 stone, 5 surtling cores) and begin placing pieces of wood into it. After a few seconds, you’ll get charcoal.

Place those pieces of charcoal into the right side of the smelter (20 stone, 5 surtling cores). Doing so will light it up. Now you’re ready to turn ore into bars. Swing over to the hole on the left of the smelter and place your ore into it. After a few seconds, fully formed copper bars and tin bars will shoot out.

Lastly, build a forge (10 wood, 4 stone, 6 copper). Just like the workshop, the forge also needs a roof above it, so keep that in mind. With your forge in place and copper and tin bars in hand, you can finally make bronze.

To make bronze, bring 2 copper bars and 1 tin bar to your forge. At this station, you can craft a single bronze bar from those materials. If you have 10 copper bars and 5 tin bars in your inventory, you can craft 5 bronze pieces at a time.

With bronze in hand, you can begin crafting bronze armor and weapons, which are perfect for your fight again The Elder.
